The Journey to
Gorton Interiors

Phil began the journey into upholstery with an apprenticeship at Bray Designs in Berkshire.

He shadowed experienced upholsterers, learning every aspect of the craft and created his first headboard within a few months—a milestone that ignited a deep passion for creating furniture.

He found joy in building items from scratch and transforming them into finished pieces ready to bring happiness to clients.

Phil later joined Acorn Upholstery in Maidenhead, Berkshire, following a mentor from Bray Designs.

He immersed himself in mastering the trade—cutting and sewing fabrics, carpentry, and technical drawings.

This is where he developed a profound understanding of how fabrics behave and honed the skills to turn designs into reality.

At the age of 20, Phil took a bold step and launched his own business, Gorton Upholstery.

He dedicated himself to building a company that reflected his passion for quality craftsmanship and design.

Just 13 years later, Phil welcomed the opportunity to merge Gorton Upholstery with Milne Associates, a luxury curtain-making company.

He expanded his expertise to include high-end curtain design and fabrication, gaining a holistic view of the soft furnishings industry.

Phil realised he missed the hands-on work that fueled his creativity and passion.

He then made the difficult decision to leave Milne Associates and launched Gorton Interiors where he was able to return to the workshop, create furniture with care, collaborate with seamstresses, and personally oversee installations.

Gorton Interiors was founded in 2011 by Phil Gorton. With years of experience and a lot of passion for the industry, Phil set up Gorton Interiors to provide luxury upholstery to clients around the world.
